our fair city

On the Bay Area Photo Club field trip Saturday to the Joe Jamail Skate Park, we got there a little early (quite a bit early, actually) and shot the sunrise behind the downtown Houston Skyline from the Sabine Street bridge. These are two takes on the scene - the top uses a plug-in called Lucis Art and adds more midtone contrast, and the bottom is more of a panoramic blend of a couple of different exposures. I'd like to get opinions on which one you like better. The Lucis Art style (top) always seems to generate opinions - you either love it or hate it. Anyway, please comment - photographers and non-photographers.

  1. I can hardly type this...but I like the Lucis one better (gag). I shot that same scene and deleted all mine, I just don't understand how yours can look so good. Must be that plug in, two days in a row I like the effect you have gotten. Just don't rub it in. I like how you have included the trees along the bottom of the image, it somehow makes Houston seem a little prettier.

  2. Both treatments are really nice Steve! I'm a big fan of Lucis Art post-processing and so naturally my favorite is the top photo. Nice composition on the shot as well.

    Cheers!

  3. I'm sorry Steve. There is something, missing from my viewpoint, and I cannot put my finger on it. The first shot seems too bright and the bottom one probably better represents what it looked like, but is a little dark.

I hate to leave a comment like this but I'm at odds with it for some reason.

I will try to get back to you if I can figure out what it is.

  4. Both images have their pluses and minuses. You have very good artistic and design style; so, I say, which one best reflects your idea of what the scene should be is the one to go with. The top one is more literal and the bottom one is more surreal.

I know all of that does not really help, but, "Luke, trust the Force!"

  5. I like the buildings in the top shot and the sky in the bottom. The noise level in the top sky makes it look kind of "powdery" to me. I don't know how it would look, but I'm thinking composite.

    Nice shot(s).
