Mesa Arch

This is Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park. I struggled with this scene -- backlighting, flare, cloud-free sky, exposure, composition -- not much was going my way here. Finally decided to bracket and that helped a little. Another problem was that the classic shot here is at sunrise and this is about 2-3 hours after sunrise. Still a strikingly beautiful location. One I'd like to visit again and do it justice.

  1. Been there, done that. Flare doesn't bother me in the least. I like the shot for the simple fact that most people don't shoot at this time. It's a different shot from the thousands taken at that location every year.

You can see Washer Woman Arch in the background through the arch. Many people don't realize it's actually another "arch" and also called a "desert tower". The feature that appears to be next to Washer Woman is actually further south and called Monster Tower.

    Nice job Steve.

A final comment: I still hate trying to comment on your photos from another page and not being able to refer to the photo itself while forming my thoughts. Please do way with this setting and put the photo with the comments.

  2. Steve, I agree with Doug on the flare. It doesn't bother me in the least in fact I think it adds "heat" to a great desert scene. The DOF here really helps make the scene.
