Blue Angels #2

Here's another photo from Sunday's Blue Angels show at Wings Over Houston. In this one, the #1 and #4 planes are inverted. I was shooting bursts, and got lucky to get this one with a decent composition at almost a perfect right angle as they passed. The only Photoshop work was a little cropping from the top and bottom and a mild amount of sharpening masked just to the planes.

  1. Super job on getting this shot. Nice detail and framing of the shot.

  2. Great composition and clarity! It looks like the pilot of the #2 plane has his eyes closed! :-)

    Well done!

  3. Thanks for the comments guys. In fact, on the full resolution version when you zoom in you can see the pilots' heads turned watching the other planes, not looking ahead at all. Years ago, wasn't there a Blue Angels accident where all the planes hit the ground doing just that -- following the key plane and not following instruments or the horizon?

  4. I'm not a pilot, but I think at some point you have to look. The problem is when that's all you are doing.

Yes, you are correct about the crash some time ago.

And real friends don't use word verification.(:

  5. Real nice shot with everyone lined up. I believe it was the Thunderbirds that flew into the ground while praticing in the desert (pre F-16's). No matter what....you can not take your eyes off the leader. He is your eyes.
