Pelican Profile

Brown pelican, Pier 19 in Galveston. Nikon D200, 70-200 VR lens at 160mm, 1/640 sec at f/8 ... another 1-layer shot, just some tweaks in Camera Raw and some mild sharpening in Photoshop.

  1. BOB's (birds on blogs) are popular lately. This is a really nice shot Steve. Nice diagonal with the bill, good composition, color and detail. Good sharp photo.

Side comment: Any thoughts to letting the photo stay with the comments. I'm anal retentive and want to go back to the shot while commenting. It's easier for me, don't know about others.

  2. Perfect! I knew I should have left my marbled godwits on the hard drive. So, I guess my lens isn't the problem....
I agree with Doug that the diagonal of the bill is really nice, and that perfect eye with the catchlight, and I really like how the little tuft at the back of the head stands out so well. You even got some soft clouds in the background.

  3. Today must be bird day for BAPC members--Larry, Cindi and Steve have all posted bird photos.

I often feel that sharpness is sometimes over rated by us photographers, but here, the sharpness of your image lets the viewer really appreciate all the subtle details and color changes within the bird. The blue sky sets him off perfectly.

Could not tell what size softbox you used to light him from the catch light in his eyes--my way of saying the lighting is great.

  4. I used that really big softbox in the sky. Works pretty well in a pinch.
