patterns

This photo was taken last week on my trip to Washington, DC. I think it's interesting because the positive and negative spaces play off each other in a very odd way. The longer you look at it, I think the more this becomes apparent. It's a very graphic/pattern shot, and the light and dark shapes begin to fool the mind as to whether the blocks are raised or recessed. Please comment if you'd like to guess what it is. I'll be posting more from this same location this week that will put it in perspective.

  1. Wow, Fantastic! Really intriguing too, an optical illusion. It looks to me like it is curved so could it be the roof of a building from the inside? Did you have to do any perspective adjustment? I love the minimalist nature of this too, all you see are lines and shapes and shadows. Would we have any more clues if it was in color rather than black and white? I hope you print this big and hang it in your gallery.

  2. I would have to guess that it is a roof at a terminal or subway station. I really like how the complexity of the all the individual components gives way to the simplicity of the "pattern." Good job recognizing this potential photo.

  3. Yes, I did a little bit of perspective adjustment just to even things out a little - mostly along the bottom. But pretty much SOOC.
